Applying for CAT? Check Common Errors That You May Make


Common Admission Test (CAT) is the most sought-after exam for MBA aspirants in India. Through this exam the best colleges in India select candidates for their management programs. It is an online test which screens the candidate on the basis of their Quantitative Ability, Verbal Ability, Reading Comprehension, Logical Reasoning and Data Interpretation.  Indian Institutes of Management are the controlling authority for CAT. This year IIM Lucknow is responsible for conducting CAT exam in India.

The CAT admission procedure is done after calculating total scores secured by the candidates in CAT written exam, GD, PI. Apart from this, candidate’s academic performance and work experience will also be taken into consideration at the time of admission. 

To submit CAT Application Form, first step would be the Registration Process followed by filling of details, uploading of documents and payment of application fee.

There are few errors, avoiding which will ensure successful submission of CAT Application Form. Also, IIM has introduced a mechanism by which students can edit their application form.

CAT Application Process

Registration: Candidates should visit the official website and create profile. Mention all-academic, personal and work details. The process of online registration will start from 9 August,2017 and last date to submit application form is 20 September, 2017. CAT application form will be filled and submitted in the online mode only.

Application Fee: The fee is different for various categories of candidates. General category applicants have to pay INR 1800 while the reserved category candidates have to pay INR 900. Students can use credit card, debit card and net banking in order to make the payment.

Exam Center: There are total 650 test centers located in 136 cities. Applicants will be allowed to choose 4 test cities in order of their preference.

Documents Required: At least one original (not photocopied / scanned copy) and valid (not expired) photo identification. The name on your photo id must match your name as entered in the CAT application. Acceptable forms of photo id are limited to Driver’s license, Passport, PAN Card, Voter ID, College ID, Employee identification card, or a notarized Affidavit with Photo, Signature, Date of Birth and Residential Address. Photocopies of the original are not acceptable.

Reasons Why your CAT Application Form Can be Rejected

  • Photo Attached Incorrectly: Candidate does not attach a good quality of the photograph along with the application which leads to rejection. Read and follow the specifications of the photograph to avoid such discrepancies.
  • Incorrect Signature: Again, the application can be rejected because of bad quality of the submitted signature. Applicants should check the quality and also, verify the specifications before submission.
  • Incorrect Uploading: There are times when the applicant swaps the attachment of the photograph with that of the signature. This can be termed as one of the careless mistakes while filling the form but one must utmost care while uploading the images. Read carefully and choose the correct file to upload.
  • Missing Images: This means candidates sometimes upload their photograph twice or signature image twice which results in the discrepancy.
  • Incomplete submission: Since CAT Application form is in different pats- part I and Part II, candidates must carefully check if both the forms are attached together before submission. The form remains incomplete in case any one of the two parts is missing.
  • Multiple Forms: Due to few reasons, some applicants feel the need to submit multiple applications for the examination, however fee deposited against a particular application is mentioned for other application having different RID. Submit a completely filled form with authentic and correct information in time to avoid rejection.
  • Many forms are rejected if the candidates will not submit the proof of payment of application fee within the designated time frame given by authorities.

Communication address, Gender, Category, Education Qualifications, Exam City Preference, Work Experience, Percentage of Marks. All such entries are called editable entries as they are allowed to be changed.

While Date of Birth, Email ID, Mobile Number, State, Country these are the options which when once filled by the applicant cannot be changed due to security reasons.

2017: Important Dates for making Corrections in CAT Application Form

Applicants would be allowed to make amendments in the CAT application Form from 1st week of October to 2nd week of October. After the mentioned tentative dates, the information mentioned by candidates will be locked and no further chance will be provided to add or subtract any details.

-Take a print out of the corrected form
