Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS) Mumbai was setup in 1981 and offered a two year masters program at that time. In 1985, Mumbai University recognized its two year full time MMS program and in 1986 NMIMS was accorded permanent recognition.
In 2002-03, NMIMS was granted the Deemed-to-be-University status, by the Ministry of Human Resource Development. The MBA courses are offered by the School of Business Management ( SBM ) which operates under the purview of the NMIMS University. Being located in the financial capital of India gives it an advantage when it comes to Industry interface.
NMIMS Mumbai has been consistently featured among top 20 B-Schools of the country. Highlighting few rankings:
- It was ranked 12th in the CNBC TV18 2013 rankings.
- It is #7 B-School of the country according to the Business Today 2012 rankings
- Perception Based rankings given by Pagalguy.com ranked it at #17
According to the official placement report, 140 companies visited the campus. Placement figures for 2011-13 Batch stand as follows:

Admission to the two years full time programs – MBA, MBA Banking MBA Capital Markets, MBA HR and MBA Pharmaceutical Management is through the NMIMS Management Aptitude Test ( NMAT) which would be followed a Group Discussion and then an interview.
The candidates who clear the cut-offs for the NMAT would be called for the subsequent rounds i.e. GD and the interview. Based on the cumulative score of the NMAT, GD and interview, a merit list would be released and admissions would be offered.
NMAT is an online test which can be taken three times in the test window and the best of all the attempts will be considered. Fees would have to be paid for each additional attempt. The test consists of three sections – Language Skills, Quantitative skills and Logical reasoning. There is a sectional cut-off for all the three sections and one over-all cut-off.
The selection process and NMAT cut-offs for MBA, MBA Banking and MBA Capital Markets is the same whereas MBA HR and MBA Pharmaceutical Management have different processes each post the NMAT test.
The flagship program also known as MBA Core has 360 seats. Students of this course may choose their subjects from various fields like Business Environment & Strategy, Communication, Economics, Finance, Information Systems, Marketing, Operations & Decision Science and specialize in one of the fields in the second year or can opt for general management.
The MBA Banking, MBA Capital Markets and MBA Pharmaceutical Management have 60 seats each while the MBA HR program has 30 seats.
NMIMS has a student exchange program under which students can complete one trimester in one of the foreign institutes with which it has an MOU. NMIMS has linkages with a number of globally renowned foreign universities such as Case Western University, the Grenoble Ecole de Management, France, ESSCA, Angers, France; ESSCA, Budapest, Hungary; EUROMED, Marseille, France; and Athens University, Greece, among others.
The original building is under renovation, so the institute occupies a transit campus spread across 3 floors (85,000 square feet) of the 9-storey building which also houses the undergraduate Commerce programme and includes classrooms, conference rooms, library and mock trading room. The library has over 46000 books, more than 350 national and international journals and subscription to a good number of databases. The technology support for the programme is provided through a learning management system which allows courseware delivery and administration also known as the blackboard.
