IIM Ahmedabad Placements 2019 Cluster Approach

IIM Ahmedabad

The Indian Institute of Management, established on December 11, 1961, is one of the top management institutes in the country. It is the second management institute to be established after IIM Calcutta and ranks among the best B-schools in both India and the Asia-Pacific region. IIM Ahmedabad, a public business school, offers postgraduate diploma programmes in management and agri-business management, a fellowship programme and a variety of executive training programmes.

IIM Ahmedabad has a cluster-based approach for the final placements, where companies offering similar job profiles and positions are grouped into cohorts, which are then invited to the campus in particular clusters.

Notably, this year there are 3 clusters on February 8, 11 and 14 respectively. IIM Ahmedabad, however, has stated that if need be, it will follow a rolling process post Cluster 3 as well.

Also, consulting firms made offers in the management consulting roles spanning geographies including Singapore and Malaysia and continued their trend of hiring in large numbers. In the Finance Sector, the highest number of offers, 9 offers, were made by Avendus, the global leader in cross-border M&A and financial advisory services to the Enterprise Technology and Services (ET&S) sector. JP Morgan Chase & Co followed Avendus with 8 offers. The job roles included investment banking, private equity, venture capital and capital markets across functions and geographies including Hong Kong and USA.

The first cluster comprising of 5 cohorts also saw other regular recruiters namely A.T. Kearney, Bain & Co., Goldman Sachs, HSBC, McKinsey & Company, Monitor Deloitte, and Oliver Wyman, among others. Notably, the final placement process will continue for another two clusters. The second cluster will be held on February 11, 20.

IIM-A has always had an extremely rich mix of firms from diverse sectors. Consulting firms, offering management consulting roles across geographies (including Singapore and Malaysia), continue to hire in large numbers. This reinforces the strength of the general management program, said an official.

As you must have read earlier in the article, the IIM Ahmedabad Placement Process generally comprises of two parts, viz;
  • Lateral Placements: Here the companies hired students possessing prior work experience and offered them the mid-level positions.
  • Cohort Placements: Here, the corporate recruiters were classified into different cohorts based on the type of job profiles they offered. These cohort groups were then invited to the campus to participate in the placement process.

IIM Ahmedabad’s Dream Application Programme

One very interesting aspect of IIM Ahmedabad MBA Placements is an option for candidates to make ‘Dream Applications’ to the corporate firms as per their choice. This programme was kickstarted by IIM Ahmedabad 4 years ago, wherein students are allowed to pick the sector and function of their dreams, or which they wish to target in the Final Placements Process. Under this programme, students would then compose their respective ‘Dream Applications’ to the firms they like in subsequent clusters, despite already have offers in hand. Notably in 2018, IIM Ahmedabad had received around 176 Dream Applications from the students.

IIM Calcutta had its Placements 2019 on February 10, 2019 and said that it has managed to place all the students in two days of the Placement Season 2019, with an Average Salary of Rs. 24.96 lakh per annum. It added that the top consulting firms such as AT Kearney, Bain & Co., BCG and McKinsey & Co. made offers in double digits. Other prominent names included EY-Parthenon, Alvarez & Marsal, and PwC. amongst others.
