Restaurant Management

A restaurant management degree is an obvious place to start. It is important to understand that this is not a degree that will teach you how to be a chef. An experienced chef might take this type of course if they are planning to open or take over a restaurant, but it is more about the practical running of the business rather than teaching the skills a person needs to be a chef.

A restaurant management degree might teach a wide assortment of skills. To start, it will probably cover things like restaurant finances, staff management, running a kitchen, inventory management, customer service, safe food handling, regulations concerning the food-service industry and more. As you can see, it is mostly a degree that focuses on the skills needed to manage the operations of a restaurant.

Hospitality Management

In some cases, hospitality management and restaurant management are used interchangeably as it concerns degrees. With that said, hospitality management can be a term that covers a broader array that includes the management of businesses like hotels, casinos, nightclubs and event venues, as well as restaurants.

With a hospitality management course, you will learn many of the same skills that would be included in a restaurant management degree. In some cases, schools might even offer a hospitality management course that has modules to adapt it to the specific interest of the student.

Food Service Management

A food service management degree provides an education that is similar to that of a restaurant management degree. It could be useful to a person looking to become a restaurant manager, but it might not cover all of the necessary skills. In many cases, food service management courses are a part of getting a restaurant management degree.

With this type of learning opportunity, the course focuses on the management of a food service operation. This includes the safe handling of food, managing staff, dealing with the public, workplace safety, managing inventory and more. However, it might not include the business education you would get with degrees for restaurant management and hospitality management.

Kitchen Management

This is a course you can take, but it might not necessarily be a full degree. It can be a part of a larger program to obtain a restaurant management degree, or it might be a course a restaurant worker (like a chef) takes if they plan to open their own restaurant or move on to a management role. This course would teach about the different types of kitchen workers and managing them as a team. It would also cover kitchen safety, the use of kitchen equipment, managing inventory and more.

Culinary Arts

A culinary arts degree is not a necessity for running a restaurant, but it can help with becoming a chef. Having the degree could prepare the individual for a future in restaurant management. While the courses can vary from one school to the next, a culinary arts degree teaches the student about the preparation, cooking and presentation of food for the purposes of applying those skills in the hospitality industry.

While a degree is not an absolute necessity for restaurant managers, it can do a lot to help advance your career in the industry. Along with experience, having a degree looks good on your resume. Beyond that, the courses will provide you with the skills you need to have success in the role of restaurant manager.
