XAT 2019: Analysis & Expected Cut-off

The level of difficulty of the XAT 2019 Paper was changed this year, as compared to the previous year. While VARC turned out to be at slightly tougher, Quant & DILR would have proved to be a problem for the students. This was soon compensated by the Decision Making section which was moderate but tricky. At a glance, an overall raw score of around 31-32 should fetch a student a 96%ile in XAT 2019.The overall structure of the XAT paper is as follows:

XAT 2019 Analysis: Verbal and Logical Reasoning

Verbal ability and Logical Reasoning was slightly tougher than last year, mainly due to Verbal section having difficult CR and FIB questions. The section had Reading Comprehension with 4 passages of 3 questions each which were quite lenghty. The RC passages were from familiar areas of Psychology, Art and Social issues. There was one poem (Black Boat) with 2 questions and that was very difficult. The 2 para jumble questions were quite easy and one could have easil eliminated the wrong options to reach the correct answer. The FIB questions weren't easy either and some of the CR questions were quite difficult. A serious candidate could have attempted 16-18 questions with 80% accuracy. It was definitely time consuming and a student could have taken around 45-50 minutes for the section. The breakup was as follows:

XAT 2019 Analysis: Decision Making

The level of the Decision Making was quite similar to last year. There were no singlets and it made the task of reading easier. Situational decision making dominated the section with 18 questions. No questions appeared from Mathematical/Analytical Reasoning, thus students might have attempted 2-3 more questions. There were 3 caselets (Racket, Limo, ice-cream = music) which were similar to those that were there in previous year papers which made this sections slightly easier. The breakup was as follows:

XAT 2019 Analysis: Quant and DILR

This section was slightly tougher than last year’s. There were 21 questions of QA and most of them were from Geometry and Algebra (including co-ordinate and Trigonometry). Arithmetic questions were doable but Geometry questions were a hard nut to crack. In Data Interpretation, there were 2 sets comprising 6 questions in total. One of the DI sets was tricky. There were a few questions which were a little ambiguous. 1 DI question on proportion of Economists and that of Engineers was incorrect as no information about the share of Engineers and others was given. 1 Quant question on roots was incorrect since x was mentioned in the root. Students would have been wise to avoid these questions. In a nutshell, one could have attempted 2-3 DI questions and 13-15 Quant questions in about 65-70 minutes. The break-up was as follows:
